The presenters have all completed the Arabic diploma course at the Islamic University of Madinah.

All three presenters also hold Shariah Law Degrees and are Registered Sworn Translators of the High Court of South Africa in the Arabic and English Languages.

Sh. Muneer Abduroaf is also a practising attorney of the High Court of South Africa and works at the University of the Western Cape Law Faculty. He has lectured Muslim Personal Law as a guest lecturer and as a co lecturer at the UWC Law Faculty.

FIQH COURSES AND BASIC CONTENT

1. FIQH OF PURIFICATION (SUNDAY MORNINGS – FEBRUARY)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: Categories of cleansing waters; Types of Khobath; Types of Hadath; Tayammum; Najies articles; How to remove Najies; Using the Siwaak; How to perform Istinjaa’; How to perform Wudhu; How to answer the call of nature; How to perform a Ghusl; Using the leather sock (Khuff); Menstruation; Nifaas and Isti?aadoh.

2. FIQH OF PRAYER (SUNDAY MORNINGS – MARCH)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: The five daily solaah; The Sunnah Solaah; Solaah for rain; Jumuah Solaah; Solaah for the Solar and Lunar eclipse; Solaah of the traveller; When it is permissible to join solaah; When to perform the various solaah; How to perform the various types of solaah; The conditions (Shuroot) before performing Solaah; Requirements for the validity of a Solaah and things that nullify the Solaah.

3. FIQH OF FASTING AND CHARITY (SUNDAY MORNINGS – APRIL)

Some of the topics that will be covered in the Fiqh of Fasting are: Intention for fasting; Conditions for fasting; Excuses that validate eating during Ramadh?n; The Pillars of fasting; Things that nullify the fast; Rules of Ift?r and Sa??r; Things that are detested while fasting; Things recommended at the time of Ift?r; Things encouraged during the month of Ramadh?n: Qod?’ of days of the month of Ramadh?n; Fasting of old persons, sick and pregnant persons; Days during which it is recommended to fast and i’tik?f.

Some of the topics that will be covered in the Fiqh of Charity are: The six items that are zakaatable; The Zakaah payable on livestock; The Zakaah payable on gold and silver; The Zakaah payable on crops; The Zakaah payable on fruits. The Zakaah payable on merchandise; The Zakaatable amount (nisob) with regard to the zakaatable commodities; The zakaah for Eidul Fitr; The eight categories of persons who may receive zakaah. The five categories of persons who should not receive zakaah.

4. FIQH OF MINOR AND MAJOR PILGRIMAGE (SUNDAY MORNINGS – MAY)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: Requirements for hajj and Umrah; Matters to set in order before leaving for hajj or Umrah; Upon whom is hajj and umrah fard; Terminologies; The Meeqaat; The Arkaan, The Waajibaat of Hajj and Umrah; The Requirements before donning the Ihraam; Prohibitions when in the state of Ihraam; The Shuroot and Sunnah of Tawaaf and Sa’iy; Methods of Performing Hajj; 8th of Thul-Hijjah (Youmut-Tarwiyah); 9th of Thul-Hijjah (Youmul-Wuqoof/Arafaat); 10th of Thul-Hijjah (Youmul-Eidul-Adhaa); 11th of Thul-Hijjah (1st Day of Tashreeq); 12th of Thul-Hijjah (2nd Day of Tashreeq).

5. FIQH OF INHERITANCE (SUNDAY MORNINGS – JUNE)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: The Islamic Law of Inheritance; The Islamic Law of Wills; An Overview of the South African Succession Laws and its impact on the application of the Islamic Laws of Succession; Working out practical examples of Islamic Inheritance (Islamic Law) and an analysis of South African case law will also form part of the presentation.

6. FIQH OF MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE (SUNDAY MORNINGS – JULY)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: Rules, requirements, and consequences of engagements (Khitbah); the rights and obligations regarding marriage (Nikah); the consequences of divorce (Tolaq); and the general rules (as found in the shariah) that govern both marriage and divorce. Aspects of the current Muslim Marriages Bill (and how it would affect Muslims) will be looked at.

7. ISLAMIC LEGAL MAXIMS  (SUNDAY MORNINGS – AUGUST)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: Analysing the five Major Maxims, its branches, and its proofs. Practical application of these Maxims in various situations will be looked at.

8. PRINCIPLES OF ISLAMIC JURISPRUDENCE (SUNDAY MORNINGS – SEPTEMBER)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: Makkee and Madinee Soerah; Qot’ee and Thonnee evidence; Ijmaal (brief general principles) and Tafseel (detailed) evidence; Five Akhaam (values) found in the Quran; Illah (Rationale); I’jaaz, Asbaabun Nuzool (reason for revelations); Types of Hadeeth; Anatomy of Hadeeth; Sanad (Chain of narrators); Tafseer and Ta’weel; Commands and prohibitions; Naskh (abrogation); Ijmaa’ (consensus); Qiyaas (Analogy); Istikhsaan (equity in Islaam); Istislaakh (consideration of Public Interest); Oerf (customs); Istiskhaab (presumption of continuity); Saddoeth tharaa’i’ (blocking the means); Khoekoem shar’ee (law or value of the sharee’ah); Ta-aaroedh al adillah (conflict of evidences); Ijtihaad (independent Reasoning).

9. ISLAMIC RUQYAH – QURAAN AND SUNNAH (SUNDAY MORNINGS – OCTOBER)

10. JANAZAH PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT (SUNDAY MORNINGS – NOVEMBER)

Some of the topics that will be covered are: How to muni (wash) and kafan (shroud) his/her parent, child, friend or any other person who has passed on. The course discussions will include subjects relating to death, afterlife, and various aspects of a Muslim funeral. The signs of near death/death, it significances, and much more will be also be looked at. As aspects of Inheritance will also be discussed.
